Rethinking Global Justice
The African Transitional Justice Research Coalition (ATJRC), in partnership with the CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, hosted a two-day dialogue titled “Rethinking Global Justice: Thoughts from Ukraine and South Africa.”
Thoughts from Ukraine and South Africa
The dialogue brought together African and Ukrainian scholars, policymakers, civil society leaders, and students for an in-depth exchange on shared challenges and reciprocal lessons in the pursuit of justice.
At a time of shifting global alliances, the selective application of international legal norms, and widening inequalities in accountability, the conversations explored how experiences from both regions can inform a more inclusive, consistent, and humane approach to global justice.
Key Objectives of the Dialogue
- Support sustained, mutual engagement between African and Ukrainian actors.
- Review global reconfigurations affecting international justice and Africa’s role.
- Reflect on South Africa’s foreign policy tensions between BRICS and justice institutions.
- Provide a platform for Ukrainian voices and lived experiences.
- Explore reciprocal lessons on mobilisation, legal strategies, and resilience.
- Promote regional and global learning on justice, solidarity, and the rule of law.
The discussions underscored the importance of dialogue across regions affected by conflict and transitional processes. By connecting African and Ukrainian experiences, participants emphasised the need for a reimagined global justice system grounded in fairness, solidarity, and shared humanity.
ATJRC extends sincere appreciation to all speakers, facilitators, and participants whose insights made this exchange a space for genuine reflection and collaboration.
We invite transitional justice practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to continue engaging with us as we explore new pathways for justice and peace in an interconnected world.
