Nearly three decades after the end of apartheid, many families are still waiting for answers. In this episode of our In Conversation series, we sit down with Sesetu Holomisa, Project Officer at the Foundation for Human Rights, to discuss the ongoing struggle for truth and justice.

Unfinished Business — Truth, Trauma & Accountability

Sesetu works within the Unfinished Business of the TRC thematic area, supporting families of apartheid-era victims who continue to seek accountability and closure.

She brings a wealth of experience from her previous role as an Associate at the Vikāra Institute, where she focused on systems development for meaningful change. Her work is rooted in a strong commitment to women’s rights, memory politics, and transitional justice.

In this interview, Sesetu speaks about:
  • The long and painful wait for justice for families of apartheid-era victims
  • The importance of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into political interference in the prosecution of TRC cases
  • How memory and intergenerational trauma shape South Africa’s pursuit of justice
  • Why truth recovery is essential for building a more just and accountable future

“The Inquiry can provide an opportunity for families to get the answers as to why the cases weren’t investigated when they should have been, at the right time, when more people could have been prosecuted.” ~ Sesetu Holomisa

In Conversation is a storytelling series exploring voices shaping peacebuilding, transitional justice, and human rights work across Africa and beyond.
