Confronting Gendered Violence – Insights from the ATJRC Gendered Violence Hub

On 16–17 July 2025, the African Transitional Justice Research Coalition (ATJRC) held the first meeting of the Gendered Violence Hub at ALN House, Nairobi.

Over two days of powerful dialogue, scholars, practitioners, and activists examined the persistence and transformation of gendered violence during and after conflict and authoritarian rule.

The discussions were both rich and challenging, revealing the complex, layered, and often hidden ways gendered harms continue to manifest across societies.

Key Reflections

Participants explored several cross-cutting themes:

  • Progress and gaps in international justice on gender-related crimes, and the untapped potential of regional courts, universal jurisdiction, and grassroots activism.
  • Women’s participation in peacebuilding and politics, 25 years after the WPS agenda — still fragile, often threatened, and in some contexts violently suppressed.
  • Memory and narrative as vital tools for change — how feminist storytelling, art, and education can challenge dominant histories and promote healing.
  • Justice beyond the state, including community-led dispute resolution and strategic litigation where formal systems fall short.
  • Gender apartheid as an urgent legal and political issue demanding recognition as a systemic form of exclusion and harm.

The gathering, generously hosted by ALN Academy Kenya, reaffirmed the importance of feminist, intersectional, and community-led approaches to justice. It was a collective call to reimagine what gender justice can look like, moving beyond narrow framings of harm toward inclusive, transformative remedies.

A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, facilitators, and support teams whose commitment and collaboration made this convening possible. Together, we continue the work of advancing gender justice and resilience across Africa and beyond.
