Biography
Gaba Capitaine (she/they) currently works as a Research Associate at Triangle Project and is a Master of Philosophy candidate in the Justice and Transformation program at the University of Cape Town. Her work is rooted in community-engaged research and advocacy that foregrounds the lived experiences, agency, and resilience of LGBTQI+ persons in South Africa. Her research interests currently explore the impacts of growing anti-gender and anti-rights formations on the lives of South African LGBTQI+ communities in the areas of political participation, education, healthcare, gender-based violence and climate change. Drawing on her academic background in transitional justice and democratic governance, Gaba has contributed to numerous local, national and transnational advocacy initiatives aimed at strengthening equitable access to the constitutional and human rights of LGBTQI+ folk, their families and allied communities. In employing an intersectional queer feminist ethos throughout her work, she seeks to bridge academic research and grassroots activism to advance inclusive, rights-based responses to social inequality.”
