Biography
Anastasia Joan Solomons is an emerging scholar specializing in memory studies, transitional justice, and identity politics in South Africa. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Cape Town, where her research explores the intersections of collective memory, bureaucratic erasure and post-conflict governance.
Anastasia holds a Master of Philosophy in Justice and Transformation from the University of Cape Town. She has gained practical experience in the field of transitional justice through her internships at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (2020) and Ndifuna Ukwazi (2021). Most recently, she undertook archival research work with Owen Pell, the President of the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities.
Alongside her doctoral work, Anastasia serves as a Junior Research Fellow with the African Transitional Justice Research Coalition, where she supports the Memory and Education Hub and contributes to advancing interdisciplinary research across the continent.
Beyond academia, Anastasia actively engages in public scholarship. She regularly publishes op-eds in local newspapers, conducts independent research work, and delivers guest lectures at the university. Her work reflects a commitment to bridging academic insight with broader societal conversations on justice, memory, youth engagement with their personal histories, and democratic transformation.
