The film, which explores the long shadow of historical trauma in Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland region, follows Chris, a 60-year-old immigrant in Botswana, as he struggles to support his family while grappling with the belief that his late father’s unburied spirit has cursed him. Through Chris’s journey of love, loss, and reconciliation, Matabeleland opens a deeply personal conversation about generational trauma, faith, and African manhood.

The screening took place in 24 July 2025 and was followed by a virtual Q&A session with Kadandara. The discussion, moderated by Dr. Helen Scanlon (University of Cape Town), brought together participants from across the continent to reflect on how storytelling can illuminate the human dimensions of transitional justice.

Hosted in partnership with LBx Africa and ALN Kenya, the event created a meaningful space for dialogue on memory, healing, and accountability. Attendees described the experience as both moving and thought-provoking, underscoring the importance of film in shaping collective understanding of Africa’s transitional justice narratives.

“Your audience was absolutely amazing. The insights and perspectives they shared were incredibly enlightening and will be invaluable for our ongoing impact work with the film,” said producer Chloe Genga following the screening.
